FAQs : Check Proxy Professional FAQ (English) : About SOCKS :
What is SOCKS, or more specifically "Open SOCKS proxy"? |
Socks is a proxy protocol, it's main purpose is to allow applications running on
machines behind a firewall to connect to the outside world. One machine, the socks server, is connected to both networks: the internal (ie: your company) and the internet. A "socksified" application "tells" the socks server something like "Hey, it's Max, please connect me to mail.tlh.com.ar port 25". The server may connect him or not according to it's access control list.
So, what's an "open" socks proxy? It's a proxy server that allows _anyone_ (not just the guys inside the company) to connect to anywhere (read: it doesnt have any access control). It's much like an open relay, but worse, because the connection will appear from the machine running the socks server. In the open relay case, there are a way of knowing who abused the relay by _just_ looking at the headers... In the socks case, there's no evidence but the logs in the server. You will need to contact the admin in order to know who abused the
proxy... but... will be there an admin? (in most cases, not).
You'll also hear about open http proxies, wich use a different
protocol for the connection, but in the aftermath is the same thing.
